The Completion of Suits: More Than Just a Coat and Trousers
Unless your name is Fabio or you are in the adult entertainment industry, your suits are not complete once you've purchased the jacket and trousers. If you want to retain any kind of respectable reputation, you're going to have to add some dress shirts and ties to your wardrobe. In addition to that, you'll need a nice variety of tastefully chosen ties, a couple of leather belts, one or two pair of leather dress shoes, and finally, dress socks.
Shirts, Ties, and Suits
You should have two basic colors of shirts in your closet to go with your suits: white and blue. Yes, there are other options available and some do create some rather stunning looks, but for your professional wardrobe it's best to stick with these basics—at least at first. You can also choose some shirts of the same colors with subtle stripes, provided that you promise to never wear a striped shirt with a striped suit.
Heaven forbid you do this and add even more stripes with the tie. What are you, a professional convict? Be sensible and vary your outfit with a balanced blend of solids and patterns. Your ties should complement or match your suit. Avoid loud patterns and colors. A paisley tie is sharp, but be careful how you wear it. If you're going to do patterns around your neck, then stick with solids everywhere else.
Suits, Socks, Shoes, and Accessories
Your suits are nearly complete, but you still need a few additional items before you can call it a day. Starting from the top and working down, the first thing you need is a belt. You basically have two choices here: black leather and brown leather. That's it. No studs, no big bulky buckles, and most importantly, no other colors! Keep them thin and professional.
Moving on down to the feet, you'll need two items: socks and shoes. (Duh!) Not only do you need dress socks, but you need matching dress socks. If your suit is black, then your socks should be black. Navy for navy, grey for grey—you get the idea. Under absolutely no circumstances are you to wear your white cotton gym socks so get that idea out of your head right now.
As far as your shoes go, your choices here are the same as they are with the belt: black or brown leather. Furthermore, they should match the belt you are wearing. That means no brown belts with black shoes. If you are looking for something that will go with anything, stay with black. Brown goes well with tan or brown suits, so that's something you can keep in mind when you expand your wardrobe a bit.
Your suit is now complete and appropriate for office wear. If you like, you can add a pocket square to your jacket and a small watch to your wrist, but your options for accessories end there. Any other jewelry should be limited to your wedding band. Now all that's left is a trip to your barber and you'll be ready to impress anyone who's path you happen to cross.
