Men's style help. I felt like a bum on first date.?
I would like to start dressing better. I went on a first date with this girl, and even though I thought I looked good when I left the house, I felt like a bum when I saw her. We both agreed on casual and had jeans on, but I had a pretty standard leather jacket, where she had a longish brown jacket with fancy wrap around things. I had a sweater, and she had a long sleeve button up corduroy left open partially showing an awesome Goonies t-shirt. I would like to know how to compliment her style, because I'm really attracted to the book-store, coffee-shop, masters-dissertation-writing type girls. My bald head needs to work into the equation somehow too, maybe a fancy vintage-ish hat?
If nothing else, can you give me jacket ideas, with links to pictures?
Well, first things first, a leather jacket is a good basic to have in your wardrobe. But if you are trying to clean up and look more polished (which I'm assuming you are by what you described) you are probably going to want to get a nice winter wool coat for starters.

-personally I don't actually love this jacket, but this a good length for a coat like that. If you want something with more of a statement, try something with a pattern, like herringbone. I don't know your style so I don't know how comfortable you'd be with patterns, but when in doubt, black is a perfect basic.
Trench coats are good too...

For a perfect go-to date outfit, try a button-down shirt and a tie with a sweater over it. You could either dress this up or down with jeans, khakis or other dress pants. (refer to what the model is wearing underneath the trench in the previous link). How you assemble an outfit like this is purely up to you and that's where your sense of style comes in. See what you like and don't like. If you need a frame of reference, the color combination of the shirt, tie and sweater on that model is a nice one. Also, if you think this sounds too dressy for what you're looking for, like I said, you can dress it down. A nice pair of dark denim, straight leg jeans and some funky sneakers would really pull this outfit together for a casual look.
Every guy needs at least one pair of dark denim, straight leg jeans. They are easy to dress up and down which is what makes them a good staple in anyone's wardrobe. If you gather nothing else from this, dark denim jeans are a must! You'd be surprised how much they spruce up your style even with whatever clothes you already own because dark denim is always more polished looking that lighter denim. You don't necessarily have to break the bank and buy designer jeans, which is what I gave you a link to, but to be honest, sometimes it's not a bad idea to invest in one good pair. I'd say you could find something nice in the 130-160 price range. The thing about jeans is you wear them, and fairly often I would imagine. So yea, you spend a little more on one pair, but they will last you several years at the very least and they're so versatile that they go with anything (the beauty of dark denim, again.) So in theory you wouldn't need to buy more jeans for awhile. But you could also opt for a pair of levi's which I believe are cheaper.
So. That's my advice on how to get started. Everyone's style and taste varies, but the points I mentioned are basics outfits and pieces every man should have in his closet.
Browse stores/websites like United Colors of Benetton, Banana Republic, J. Crew, etc for ideas. J. Crew can be very preppy sometimes, but Benetton and BR are good for basics. Benetton is especially good if you are more adventurous and willing to experiment with bolder colors and prints with your button down shirts. (When in doubt, a well tailored button-down and pair of jeans go a long way. But perhaps try to shy away from the boring french blues and such...)
As for the bald head thing, why would you be self conscious about that? I personally think a bald head is sexy as hell. It adds a little mystery. There's something to be said for a guy who can pull off a shaved head. Anyway, I wouldn't be too concerned with hats if you're interested in overhauling your entire sense of style. I hope that didn't come off condescending. It's just that hats and accessories are something you will figure out as your style develops.
Hope this helped and I wasn't too overzealous. Lol.
