How to make your leather shoes last

When kids start to settle into their shoe size, it's time to get them kitted out with some good quality shoes that will last. Choosing high quality leather shoes is a good start, but even the most durable shoes can wear down over time if not treated correctly.

Because leather shoes aren't cheap, it's important to look after your investment by getting a longer life out of them, and even more important to make sure your kids are comfortable in their shoes during the long school day. From removing stains to keeping the shape of shoes when not in use, there are many simple household tasks that can be carried out to make leather shoes last longer.

Shoe care products can often be bought at the same time you buy your shoes, ensuring you're prepared for anything from day one. Water-proofing sprays and soaps can help protect shoes from water damage, but an even more effective method can be to get leather soled shoes re-soled with rubber, which provides an added layer of protection.

If your shoes do become damaged, it's always a good idea to treat them quickly. Dirt and marks can usually be removed with a fine brush, such as an old toothbrush, and there are a number of household remedies for removing stains, including vinegar to remove salt. Shoe polish is also a time-honoured method of keeping kids school shoes presentable at all times, and again it's easy to make this at home to avoid having to pay for expensive care products - mixing one part lemon juice with two parts olive oil can be just as effective.

One of the greatest dangers facing school shoes is that they can lose shape over time if not looked after correctly, which can be incredibly uncomfortable and unsafe for the wearers. If you don't have a shoe tree or shoe rack, you can use the shoe shop method of filling the shoes with crumpled tissue paper to keep them filled out when not in use. Making sure your children always untie their shoes before taking them off, rather than opting for the lazy way, is also vital for keeping the heel of the shoes in good condition.

Finally, one sure-fire method of making sure school shoes enjoy a longer life is to buy a second pair. Rotating shoes daily not only stretches out their lifespan, but is also more hygienic giving the shoes time to air out between wears.

Simple Tips on How to Take Care of Different Types of Shoes

Leather shoes

Take care of leather shoes by using three simple, basic steps: clean, polish, protect. Using a damp cloth or soft brush, clean the surface of leather shoes to remove dirt and dust. Spread a shoe polish that is specially made for leather over their entire surface. Allow the polish to dry and buff them using a soft brush to make them shiny and look good as new. Some leather wax and oil are also available to protect leather shoes from wetness and moisture.

Store them on areas that have good air ventilation. Make sure that you put these on air dry after every use before storing them in cabinets or shoe racks. This prevents accumulation of shoe moisture that often leads to formation of fungus. If ever fungus becomes present on your shoes, remove them using a damp cloth. It is important that shoes made of leather are kept dry all the time. Use paper towels or tissues to pat dry their inner areas to prevent them from having bad odor due to bacteria and fungal buildup.

Suede Shoes

Use a suede brush in cleaning shoes made from suede material. Do light strokes that go on the same direction. This effectively removes dirt and dust and helps keep the fibers of suede look good as new. It also prevents these fibers from falling or tearing apart. Remove stains caused by water by wetting the entire shoe surface. Dry blotting the shoe exterior using a piece of cloth then start cleaning it with the suede brush. On the other hand, stains caused by oils and dyes are hard to remove using the above techniques. This means that there is a possibility that you cannot return the original look of your sued shoes. Apply a layer of shoe protector especially made for suede after each cleaning session.

Rubber shoes

Combination of soap and warm water effectively removes dirt and dust from the surface of rubber shoes. Athletic, rubber shoes used for hiking and climbing activities will more or less likely have soil and dirt accumulation on their soles. Without submerging the entire shoes, put the rubber soles under warm water to help scruff of hard-to-remove dirt that has already hardened.

Another common problem with shoes made from rubber is ink stains. These are not easily removed from their surface by using plain soap and water.  Look for lemon extract and put some drops on cotton. Rub it over the ink-stained surface and use a soft brush to further remove left shoe exterior discoloration. It is advisable to use mild soaps over strong detergents. These prevent destruction of the silicone coating of rubbers. Use rubber conditioners to further protect and enhance your rubber shoes.
