Dresses to suit your style
Over the centuries, dresses have evolved from long, modest, corseted to those that are shorter, show more skin and define a woman's personality. Of course, location also played a factor. 19th century England, for example, saw fuller dresses with tighter corsets.
Towards more modern times, women began to express their independence and individuality. Breaking free from the shackles of a male-dominated society, they began to wear clothes that defined them.
The First and Second World Wars, meanwhile, also contributed to fashion, in a sense. In order to save material, dresses became shorter. It is interesting to note that clothes were rationed till the year 1949.
Now, dresses (in Swedish klänningar) come in so many shapes and styles that it is difficult to keep track. Some of the more common ones are wrap dress, A-line dress, peasant dress, empire dress, tunic, sheath and sun dress. There are also those meant for particular occasions. They include the gown, cocktail dress, ball gown, evening gown, prom dress and formal dress.
The jacket, meanwhile, is worn either for fashion or for utilitarian purposes. In England, the term ‘jacket' (in Swedish jackor) is used to distinguish it from a coat. In American English, however, the term is interchangeable.
For the purpose of fashion, there's a wide range of jackets to choose from like the dinner jacket, bolero, leather jacket, blazer, duffle coat and the Harrington jacket. For utilitarian purposes, you can find the fleece jacket, parka, raincoat, windcheater, field jacket and the duster.
Fashion has come such a long way that it is difficult to attempt to record its evolution as you would have to take into account region, ethnicity, sex and period. What was once considered outdated at times comes back as contemporary fashion. Dresses, jackets and shoes, however, have been worn for centuries, no matter the style.
With the advent of the Internet and television, people are now more exposed to the various styles of clothes. From the practical to couture, it is almost limitless. What has changed, though, is people's awareness of certain material to manufacture items. Now, there is widespread opposition to usage of animal skins for style statements. With the invention and discovery of so many different types of material, it is no longer considered acceptable to use animal products for fashion, barring a few regions.
