Why would an Amish horse 'trainer' wrap leather straps around the horses neck, from the ears to the chest?
I was taking an Amish woman out to stores yesterday and we passed a so called horse trainer on the road. The man had wrapped leather straps around the horses neck, from his ears to his chest. WHY? This same man hitched up some kind of equipment to a horse's legs and it looked like it was run by electricity/battery. The horse's ears were back, and the legs were being lifted up high. I did contact someone about it at the time, but I don't think it was checked into. That was last year. Now this with the leather strapping. It doesn't seem humane to me.. the guy also had a whip on the side of his training wagon. The woman said the man is good to his horses... I doubt that. Too many of the Amish, an animal is treated as machinery... they don't seem to know that animals feel pain, the cold of winter or the hot of summer. If anyone knows about this method of training, please let me know... I'd NEVER seen it done. Thanks!
I know a blanket wrapped around the neck is a comfort thing for many horses, but not tight leather straps. And no battery should be used to shock a horse.
Contact your animal control unit and talk to them about this. They will know if this is abuse or some odd training method.
And yes, I agree, not all Amish are 'good' with their animals.
