Leather Glove Export Industry on a Downslide
With orders from international clients drying up fast and the domestic market showing no signs of improvement, leather gloves exporters across the country, particularly in Bengal, are facing a dreary future. The sharp contraction in export orders by international clients has spelled trouble for SMEs engaged in this sector.
Dire Straits
Following steep drop in global demand, exports have fallen by over 30% every month since the beginning of this year. The Indian leather sector has witnessed a job loss of around 75,000 to 100,000 people during the last 5 months. Moreover, with the impact of the economic downturn becoming increasingly pronounced, the chances of an early revival in demand seem slim for the domestic leather glove export sector.
Though the first 6 months of the current financial year turned out to be good for the leather export sector, the period beginning from October 2008 till date has been poor in terms of revenue earnings and export growth. The leather sector registered a growth of 20% in exports during the first half of the current financial. However, the industry failed to sustain its margins and its export growth went down to 14% in the last 3 months.
Jobs at stake
Bengal leather cluster, which is known as the main production base for industrial leather gloves, also suffered a major setback on account of the declining export growth curve. It witnessed a 34% drop in export volumes in February, plunging to Rs 65.41 crore from Rs 99 crore in January. Flagging export business has also put the livelihood of nearly 3 lakh people, who are employed in 400 leather glove supply units based in Bengal, at stake.
Besides, clients in the US and Europe have also started demanding 20% to 30% discount on leather products as raw material prices have come down in the last 6 months. This has put small-scale exporting units under tremendous pressure to offer price cuts in order to retain their clients and maintain their sales growth. Tough competition from Chinese manufacturers has also made it difficult for SME leather glove exporters to survive in the overseas markets.
After suffering months of slump, leather manufacturers are hoping that things would improve from the third quarter of the calendar year. The recently introduced special package worth Rs 325-crore for leather cluster is also expected to bring some relief for these small leather glove export units.
