Protecting Your Dog's Paw Pads Year Round

Protecting your dog's paw pads year round is important because whenever he is on his feet, his paw pads will be used. Most dog owners fail to realize that when your dog goes out for a walk his paw pads are exposed to the weather and other things can damage any part of his pad. You may want to consider protecting his paws from the weather elements such as heat and cold, salt and de-icing chemicals. The impact of these things can cause some damage to your dog's paw pads such as cracking and dryness from the cold and heat, and bleeding from stepping on glass or other sharp objects.

So, if you should see your dog lick his pads when you come in from a walk take notice. He may be removing chemicals, salt, sand or other things between his paws and pads. He also may be trying to moisten them because they are dried or cracked due to indoor heat. This is a sure sign that you may need to protect his feet when going out for walks or exercise.

Winter

When you take your dog for a walk in winter and try to avoid the areas where salt and de-icing chemicals have been used. If you cannot avoid these areas, when you bring him inside, take a damp towel and try to remove as much salt and de-icing chemicals as possible. Carefully try to remove these chemicals from between his paws. Otherwise your dog will lick these areas and ingest these chemicals into his body which may cause some bad reactions.

You can use soap and water in a dishpan or aluminum pan by the door if your dog takes to this well. Otherwise try to find some cleaning solutions which can remove these chemicals. Use what ever works best for you.

Summer

When you take your dog for a walk in summer be sure to test the sidewalk or street pavement by standing on those areas with your bare feet. If it's too hot for you, it's also too hot for your dog. Try to take these walks in the cool of the morning or evening. The heat can cause your dog's paws to get dry and crack. You will want to avoid this as much as possible. If your dog's feet are dried or cracked, you can help this by using a moisturizer on his paws when you see signs of cracking or dryness.

If you should take your dog for a walk in the rain or after a heavy downpour be sure to clean his paws when you get back inside. If you take your dag for a walk along the beach, sand, dirt, other things can lodge between his paws. Be sure to clean his paws of sand and dirt when he gets inside. This can easily be done by taking a damp towel and wiping and cleaning his paws when you are in the house.

Remedy

To help prevent the cold, heat and de-icing chemicals from getting on the dogs paw pads you can buy dog boots, shoes or dog boot wax. The boot items come in all sizes and will fit the paws of your dog. You can buy plastic and tough leather sole and toe protection materials. These boots will protect your dog's paws from the weather, chemicals, dirt and sand. Boots and boot wax come in handy especially if you should have tile, linoleum or wood floors in your home to help him from slipping.

Measure your dog's paws for the proper size. Put the paw on a piece of paper on the floor and trace around it. Measure the widest part of the tracing from one side to the other. Take a tape measure for the distance between these two points to the nearest ½-inch.

The sizes for plastic boots are as follows:

  • Tiny: Paws less then 7/8-inches wide.
  • XX Small: Paws ½-inch to 1" wide.
  • X Small: Paws 1" to 1 ½" wide.
  • Small: Paws 1 ½" to 2" wide.
  • Medium: Paws 2" to 3" wide.
  • Large:  Paws 3" to 4" wide.
  • Extra Large: For Paws over 4".

The sizes for leather boots are as follows:

  • XXX Small: Paws up to 1 ½".
  • XX Small: Paws 1 ½" to 2 ¼".
  • X Small: Paws 2 ¼"  to 2 ¾".
  • Small: Paws 2 ¾" to 3 ¼".
  • Medium: Paws 3 ¼" to 3 ¾".
  • Large: Paws 3 ¾" to 4 ¼".
  • X Large: Paws 4 ¼" to 4 ¾".
  • XX Large: Paws greater than 4 ¾" up to 5 ½".

Conclusion

You can protect your dog's paws year round by using boots or boot wax. They come in leather and rubber and a wide variety of colors to choose from. You may have to experiment as some may or may not work well with your pet.
