I'm looking to purchase a new sewing machine. Singer 4411 vs. 4423?
I've always bought Singer or Brother but after abour 2-3 years they seem to break and I buy a new one. I don't sew much at all - just hem some cotton pants every so many months so it's mostly sitting and collecting dust. That's why I prefer something less than $200. I don't want to spend much and saw the Singer 4411 and 4423 Heavy Duty. I was thinking, if it's "Heavy Duty" I could sew denim material or sew some patches on a leather bag. Could I get your opinion - which is better? Or is there something else out there you recommend? I usually just sew straight lines so the number of built in stiches are not necessary. Thanks for your help.
How do your machines break? Would you consider a more expensive machine knowing it could last much longer? (I killed a $150 cheapie in less than a year of use; I'm still sewing on the 15 year old $600 machine that replaced it... much better cost per year).
Many "broken" machines that people who are not very experienced with sewing bring me are actually just dirty, have a bad or backwards needle, or are misthreaded. Very few are really broken. Very few of the cheapies, though, sew as nicely as either my 15 year old machine or the 1954 Singer 15 I paid $10 for at a garage sale.
